Wanetah was born on September 23, 1927 on a farm in Hartford, Kentucky during the Great Depression, but married Robert J. Sidio the love of her life in 1942. She was a young girl at the start of World War II, but similar to other women of the time, was determined to make a difference, and carried out her patriotic duties through several defense positions while Robert went through military training and ultimately to war. At Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, Wanetah test fired machine guns for airplane turrets and fired other weapons up to the 95 mm cannon. She was one of the most proficient women at assembly/disassembly of the Springfield and Enfield Rifles. These were significant accomplishments despite the fact she did not have two prerequisites for the job - she was not a high school graduate, and she was 2 years shy of her 18th birthday. Wanetah later returned to Evansville, Indiana and worked for the defense contractor, Faultless Caster, inspecting ammunition. With victory in Europe and the return of her husband, Wanetah continued to serve as an Officer’s Wife and Mother, for 24 more years of military family life. They retired from the military in 1969, and Wanetah remained active in the the local school district where she served as a “Just Say No” counselor. She opened Nita’s Ceramics in their Clarksville home where she taught Ceramic Arts through the 70s, 80s and 90s; and where she continued to enjoy their retirement and the local wild birds into her 80s.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Cooper and Myrtle Harrison; and her husband, Robert J. Sidio.
Survivors include her children, Robert A. Sidio (Sandy), Jerome B. Sidio (Roxanne), Catherine Sidio McIntee (Mark), Robert Wayne Sidio; grandchildren, Rob, Randy, Ryan, Brad, Eric; great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Isabella, Kara, Carter, Reid, Isaac, Aiden; special niece, Lenora; friend, Brooke.
