Walton Northington Smith, Jr. died April 23, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Walton was born May 4, 1940, in Clarksville, TN, to Walton N. Smith, Sr. and Mary Mock Smith. He graduated from Clarksville High School in 1958. He attended and played collegiate golf at Memphis State University, Furman University, and Austin Peay State University, graduating from APSU. He then served two years in the United States Air Force.
His loves included his faith, family, community, and golf. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church. His manners and polite nature permeated his activities; he was a gentleman's gentleman.
Walton was the principal of Mann & Smith Insurance for over 40 years. He cared deeply about the economic and social health of the community, holding numerous leadership positions focused on advancing the community. During his life, he served as president of the Clarksville Chamber of Commerce, chair of the Economic Development Council, and chair of the Gateway Hospital Board of Directors.
An avid golfer, Walton was happiest playing or practicing golf. He won numerous local, state, and regional tournaments, including the San Antonio City Open (1965), the Tennessee State Amateur (1965), and the Tennessee Senior State Amateur (1997). He enjoyed traveling across the United States to play courses many only dream of playing. Walton was an advocate for golf and co-founder of the Clarksville Golf Association. He was especially interested in the development of junior golfers.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Judy Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Marty Smith; his two sisters, Mary Milam Jenkins and Corinne Smith and cousin Bette Hestle; his son, Walton N. Smith, III (Amy Augenblick); daughter Nancy R. Smith (Chris Goldman); daughter Ashley S. Alexander (Carson); Marty’s children, Cal McKay (Amy), Robin Ann Fleming (Brandon), and Chase McKay (Mitzi); and their grandchildren Isabella Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Clara Goldman, George Goldman, Walton Goldman, Thomas Alexander, Madeline Alexander; Durrett McKay, Cal McKay, McKay Fleming, Logan Fleming, Carson Harper, and Miles McKay; and one great-grandson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clarksville Junior Golf Tour (c/o Diana Samuels 225 Richaven Road, Clarksville, TN 37043) or Good Samaritan Ministry at First Baptist Church.
Friends are invited to a celebration of life with the family from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the Clarksville Country Club. Prior to the reception, the family will gather for a private graveside service at Greenwood Cemetery.
