Walter Lester (W.L.) Smith, Jr, age 89, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at Diversicare Nursing Facility in Martin.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 20, at 12:00 PM, at Bethel Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Sango. Visitation will be from 10:00 that morning until the hour of the service with burial to follow at Sango Cemetery.

Walter was born in the Sango community of Clarksville, Tennessee to the late Walter L. Smith and Mary Etha Poole Smith on August 15, 1934. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Martha Johnson Smith; seven sisters Martha Elliott, Evangeline Mandeville, Mildred Davidson, Stella Smith, Margaret Dowdy, Flora Belle Legate, Nancy Davidson, and one brother Ronald Smith.

He is survived by his four children; Sherrie (Cliff) Sweat of Ripley, Jeffery (Marie) Smith of Clarksville, Danny (Nell) Smith of Newbern, Timothy (Paula) Smith of Union City; six grandchildren, Kala (Josh) Smith of Joplin, MO, Tyler (Amy) Smith of Cookeville, Kristen (Garrett) Shepard of Henning, Graham Smith of Troy, Hunter (Stephanie) Smith of Farragut, and Cary (Brad) Jones of Lexington, along with 12 great-grandchildren.

Fondly known as Daddy, Poppy and Uncle WL, Walter will be best remembered for his strong work ethic, love of farming and how proud he was of his family. He also spent 18 years as a General Forman at Trane in Clarksville. Walter was a member of the Clarksville Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Serving as Pallbearers are his grandchildren: Kala Smith, Josh Smith, Tyler Smith, Amy Smith, Kristen Shepard, Garrett Shepard, Graham Smith, Hunter Smith, Stephanie Smith, Cary Jones, and Brad Jones. The family requests that any memorials be sent to the charity or church of their choice.
