Pastor Faye Sanders, Eulogist

I fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith…  2 Timothy 4:7

Verna Lou Lewis was a loving caring mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, auntie, cousin, and friend. She was born on October 8, 1945, to Mary Frances & William Cooksey, Theordore Roosevelt Dowdy.

Early in life, Verna Lou accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was a member of Steele Chapel on Kizer Ridge in Erin, TN

Verna Lou graduated from Burt High School in 1962, and then began her professional career at Highland Rim Economic Corporation where she and J.D Lewis started the senior citizens program in Houston County. In 1978, she moved to Brooklyn, New York where she continued her career at St. Claires Hospital as a Medical Secretary. She relocated back home to Tennessee in 1995, found a passion for helping others that she truly loved. She began her new profound career working as a Certified Nursing Assistant caring for others working at a variety of Assistant Living Facilities. Verna Lou’s patients and their families always remembered her infectious smile and joyous personality.

Verna Lou also known as “Granny”, had a smile that would light up any room she walked into and loved everyone. She had a laugh that was contagious and a personality and sense of humor that was truly one of a kind. She was just beautiful in every way you could imagine.

Possessing a warm and sweet spirit and a generous and loving heart, Granny loved spending time with her Family.

Verna Lou enjoyed playing cards with her friends, watching every single episode of Andy Griffith, dancing, cooking, and extending a helping hand to others. Those of us who were blessed to have the privilege and honor of knowing Verna Lou were touched by her appreciation for life, her passion for assisting and caring for others no matter their situation or circumstances as she opened her heart and home to everyone.
