1SGT (Ret) Alfred Nickell

1SGT(Ret.) Alfred Eugene Nickell, Sr., age 90, of Woodlawn, passed away on Friday, January 6, 2023, at Tennova Healthcare.

A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West with Elder Tony Alexander officiating.

Alfred entered into this life on October 28, 1932, in Sissonville, WV to the late William H. and Irene Casdorph Nickell. He selflessly served in the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean War, and two tours in the Vietnam War. Following his retirement, and prior to the passing of his wife, Alfred and Bernice were very active in the 187 Rakkasan Retired Association, with whom they traveled the world. Alfred loved working on the farm, being outdoors, and enjoying the wildlife on his farm.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Nickell; brothers, James and Paul; sisters, Louise and Arvella, and 3 infant siblings, Gladys, Charles, and William.

Survivors include his sons, Alfred Nickell, Jr., Jerry Nickell; daughters, Kathy (Mark) Sherrill, Deborah Nickell Massey; sister-in-law, Eleanor Nickell; grandchildren, Melissa Massey, Kirby (Sherrill) Barber, Joshua Nickell, Katherine (Sherrill) Garcia, Jacob Nickell, Shelby (Nickell) St. John; great-grandchildren, Travis Nickell, Brooklyn Brietzke, Rowan Nickell, Waylon St. John, Noah Nickell, Hudson St. John, Trace Nickell and Bennett Barber.
