Nathanael Edward August Schumpe

Nathanael Edward August Schumpe, age 45, of Clarksville, Tennessee, was called to his eternal rest with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 27, 2025, in Cozumel, Mexico.

Nathanael was born on February 8, 1980, the eighth child of Rev. Wayne and Joan nee Ruth Schumpe. He was baptized in the name of the Triune God, by his father, on February 17, 1980, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Brownstown (Wegan), Indiana.

He attended Lutheran Central School in Brownstown until the age of 11, at which time the family moved to Lexington, Texas. Nathanael attended Lexington public schools and St. John Lutheran School, Lincoln, Texas.

He confirmed his faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Palm Sunday, March 27, 1994, at St. James Lutheran Church, Lexington, Texas, and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Fedor, Texas. His confirmation verse was John 8:31 - 32. “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Nathanael graduated from Lexington High School in May 1998 and entered the United States Army in August of that year. He faithfully and honorably served our country and retired from the military in 2020. Nathanael distinguished himself while in the army, striving always to learn and improve his knowledge and skills. He rose to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 as an Info Services Tech. During his years of service, he received numerous meritorious service, achievement, and commendation medals. Nathanael was deployed to Germany, Kosovo, Kuwait, Iraq, and Korea. While serving our country, Nathanael also earned his Associate’s, Bachelor’s, and Master’s Degrees.

Nathanael had a knack for mechanical and electronic equipment. Even as a small child he loved nothing more than to take something apart to see how it worked. Sometimes this did not include putting the item back together again. He was the best arrowhead and old coin finder in the family. When asked "How do you find these things?" Nathanael, a child of four years of age, replied, "When you're walking around, you look at the ground." Even as a child he showed his matter-of-fact way of looking at the world and his dry sense of humor. Nathanael had a tender heart that loved deeply. He was loyal to, and a great defender of, those he loved. Nathanael would offer to help others without being asked and had great compassion for others, especially those who were in need. As a teenager, you could often find Nathanael lending a helping hand to elderly neighbors. What made Nathanael special wasn’t the medals he received, the qualifications he achieved, or the degrees he earned, it was what lay beneath—his tender heart. He was a loyal son and brother, and above all, a devoted father. His children were his pride and joy. He spoke of them often, with a light in his eyes that could outshine the darkest of deployments. His love for them was fierce and unwavering.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Wayne and Joan Schumpe and two siblings, Mark and Mary Schumpe. He is survived by five children: Alyssa, Jordyn, Piper, Myles Schumpe, and Naomi Harris-Schumpe; seven siblings: Elizabeth Wold of Winter Haven, Florida; Timothy (Carol) of Vallonia, Indiana; Anna (Greg) Pollert also of Vallonia; Magdalana (Josh) Clark of Moseley, Virginia; Philip (Carol) of Montgomery, Texas; Lois (Michael) Schluens of Brenham, Texas; and Martha (Malcolm) Delovio of Bryan, Texas; and dear friend, Stefanie Wall, of Clarksville, Tennessee.

Also surviving are his aunts and uncles, Judy (Erv) Aufdemberge of Macomb, Michigan; Jack Franke of St. Peter’s, Missouri; James (Annette) Schumpe of Seymour, Indiana; and Barb Schumpe of Catawissa, Missouri, and grandmother, Marilee Schumpe, of St. Charles, Missouri.

Surviving nieces and nephews include Matthew and Abby Wold; Jacob, Kyli, Celina, and Brielle Schumpe, Amber (Ryan) Potts, Stephanie (James) Bentham, and Brett Coombs; Seth (Andi), Joshua, Caleb, and Luke Pollert (Hannah Kerkhof), Levi, Samuel, and Lydia Clark; Grace Beisert (Kyle Van Arsdale), Hannah (Dakota) Miller, and Noah Beisert, Samantha (Preston IV “Buddy”) Northrup; John and Rebekah Schumpe and Magdalyn, Miriam, and Mercy Delovio.

Great nieces and nephews are Miles and Charlie Wright, Magnolia Potts, Annabelle and Christopher Bentham, Addilyn, Holland, and Baby Pollert (expected January 2026), Preston Northrup V., and Baby Miller (expected September 2025).

Visitation will be held from 10 am – 12 pm on August 18, at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, Clarksville, Tennessee. The funeral service will be at 12 pm at the church, with the Rev. Kent Holz officiating. Interment will take place at 2 pm at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West in Hopkinsville, Kentucky with Full Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church or donor’s choice.
