Martha Smith

Martha Elizabeth Johnson Smith, age 87, passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at her home surrounded by her husband and children.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 in the afternoon on Monday, June 19, 2023, at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home in Clarksville.  Visitation will be from 11:00 that morning until the hour of the service with burial to follow at Sango Cemetery.

Martha was born in Woodlawn, Tennessee, daughter of the late Leslie and Louise Johnson on April 6, 1936. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters Dorothy Fleming and Iris Clinard.

She is survived by her loving husband Walter “WL“ Lester Smith, Jr. of 68 years, four children-- Sherrie (Cliff) Sweat of Ripley, Jeffery (Marie) Smith of Clarksville, Danny (Nell) Smith of Newbern, Timothy (Paula) Smith of Union City; one brother Billy (Faye) Johnson of Woodlawn, and six grandchildren-- Kala (Josh) Smith of Joplin, MO, Tyler (Amy) Smith of Cookeville, Kristen (Garrett) Shepard of Henning, Graham Smith of Troy, Hunter (Stephanie) Smith of Young Harris, GA, and Cary (Brad) Jones of Lexington, along with 12 great grandchildren.

Martha had a multitude of talents and skills.  She was a renowned seamstress who enjoyed making custom draperies for her clients and one-of-a-kind creations for her children and grandchildren, in addition to subcontracting several new homes. While she loved designing and creating, her most important work was deeply loving and devoting herself to her husband and family.  Martha was a member of the Clarksville Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Serving as Pallbearers are her grandchildren:  Kala Smith, Josh Smith, Tyler Smith, Amy Smith, Kristen Shepard, Garrett Shepard, Graham Smith, Hunter Smith, Stephanie Smith, Cary Jones, and Brad Jones.
