MAJ (Ret.) James Vogel, 60, of Clarksville passed away on April 18, 2025 at his home. James was born James Jacobi on February 16, 1965 in Munich, Germany to the late Jutta “Charlie” Prather (Clarksville) and Benito Romero (Las Vegas, NM).
Celebration of Life will be at 12 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2025, at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home.
Burial and Military Honors will follow at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 10-12 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
James grew up living in many different places as a military child but Munich and Clarksville were the places he felt were home. He was a graduate of Northwest HS, and attended Austin Peay State University (APSU) on an Army ROTC scholarship, and became a Medical Service Corps Officer at Ft Campbell, KY. James met his wife Sherry there and after Desert Storm he decided to pursue a Nursing degree. James loved being a soldier, and being an ICU/ER nurse. He was in demand at his job, a hard taskmaster, but fair, making solid decisions with astute assessment skills and very caring towards patients. After many assignments, deployments and increasing health issues he retired in Alaska, later moving back to Clarksville. James was a man of God, strong in his faith; fiercely loved his family, German Shepherd dogs, friends, country, and helping others. He was a “fix it” or solution guy and could do just about anything he put his mind to. He enjoyed being creative – he loved painting, designing fused glass art, building & fixing things, gardening, music and movies. Traveling the world and doing high adrenaline activities was something he loved, as well as a good debate on religion and current events. He had a long painful struggle with cancer but he is finally pain free with the Lord.
James is survived by his loving wife Sherry (nee Ashley) and son Jacob Vogel of North Pole, Alaska, a sister Diana (Jeff) Floyd of Kingwood, TX; nieces Halie (Matt) Christiansen of Porter, TX, Courtney Ashley of Pulaski Co, KY, and Shelby Ashley of Lincoln Co, KY; and nephews Jonathan (Katherine) Floyd of Dallas, TX, Dakota Ashley and Waylon Ashley of Pulaski Co, KY, and Devon Ashley of Lincoln Co, KY. He is also survived by cousins Heidi McNamara and Mitchell Robinson.
He was preceded in death by his mother Jutta, a brother David Vogel, his grandparents Karl and Justina Jacobi of Munich, Germany and his aunt Ruth Robinson Brooks of Clarksville, TN.
Arrangements are in the care of McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home, 1209 Madison St, Clarksville, TN 37040.
