Gregory "Greg" John Gomes-Leyrer, 55, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 26, 2024, at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home, followed by Full Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the hour of the service at the funeral home on Saturday. His last Harley ride will follow.
Greg entered this life on July 16, 1969, in Oakland, CA; son of the late Gregory Gomes Sr. and Deanna Crabtree.
In 1988, Greg joined the army. He attended AIRBORNE school after 11 B Basic Training and AIT and proceeded to the Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP). After RIP, he went to 1st Ranger Bn.
While in 1st Ranger Bn. he deployed to Panama during Operation Just Cause. After returning, he volunteered to go to Dessert Shield/Dessert Storm. After that completion, he spent three AMAZING years in 3rd Bn. 25th Infantry Regiment in Vicenza, Italy. He left Italy being fluent in Italian, processed in Ft. Dix, New Jersey, and left in order to complete his B.S. In Computer Science.
Greg came back in the Army in 2007, as a Logistics Manager and deployed twice to Afghanistan and Korea. Before returning from Afghanistan the last time in 2013, he was hit with shrapnel from a RPG. He had to be med evac to Bahgram, Afghanistan then to Landstuhl, Germany, and then finally to Walter Reed. There he went under care from a nephrologist due to acute kidney failure and returned after Walter Reed to his unit at Ft. Campbell, KY.
The summer of 2015 he spent 3 months at West Point in New York training cadets. After West Point, he returned to his unit at Ft. Campbell. Later he was requested as the Division S-4 and moved to become the S-4 at the recruiting Bn. in Nashville.
In May of 2017, Greg was unable to stand for a period without falling. He was given the diagnosis of Neuromyelitis Optica by the Army Neurologist. Later on, to be moved to Warrior Transition Unit which was the absolute worst experience in his army career. In August, he became permanently disabled and wheelchair bound while he still served his country in uniform Daily until his retirement date. His wife Jessica also was approved to be at his side at every daily assignment or formation in with him until he retired on November 18, 2018. As the years went on Greg was recently diagnosed with T Cell Lymphoma.
Greg was a dedicated Harley Davidson Rider. He carried many titles. A Soldier. He loved his Country. He loved his brothers and sisters in Arms as his own. He was a Fighter. He truly was and Still Is an American Hero. He had such passion for Music, Technology, and Movies. He loved his family and his friends. He loved his children. He would take his shirt off his back for anyone. He loved his Dogs. “Trouble, Ranger, Miss Harley Davidson, and King Kong. He will truly be missed. We will all miss him.
In addition to his father and mother, Greg was preceded in death by his stepfather, William Leyrer; sister Lori; Grandfather Bobby and Grandmother Norene Crabtree; Grandfather Raymond and Grandmother Elaine Gomes; grandmother-in-law Billie Earls and Uncle in Law James Earls. Uncle Jack Decker, Uncle Marty and Aunt Charlene Lynch and Uncle Dennis Crabtree.
Survivors include his wife, Jessica Leyrer; children, Ashley Register, Zander Leyrer, and Elaina Leyrer; many siblings, uncles, Tommy (Cathy) Crabtree and William (Molly) Gomes; Aunts and Uncles Evonne Decker; Susan and Merl Smith; Gary and Carol Gomes; father and mother-in-law; Kourosh “Ken” and Dalphine Tahmassebi; brother-in-law Justin (Cortney) Tahmassebi; niece, Madilynn and nephew Remy Miles Tahmassebi. Grandfather In Law- Ray Earls with plethora of military family and friends.
