Edith L. Oakes, age 84 of Clarksville, Tennessee passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2024.
Edith Oakes was born in 1939, to James A. Carter and Roberta Carter (Sloan) in Kansas City, Missouri. She attended and graduated from Howard High School, Howard, Kansas.
Edith was employed as an Administrative Assistant for the U.S. Army. She worked for over 20 years serving in several Army Posts until her retirement at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Edith married Larry E. Oakes in 1964. Larry was a career soldier and a highly decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam War retiring as a Command Sergeants Major in 1989. Larry and Edith were married for 39 years until his death in 2003.
Edith was a devout member of Hilldale Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Choir and Women's Group and The Golden Nuggets. Edith was a member of the Clarksville Civitan Club and The Red Hat Society. She spent many hours volunteering for community service through the Civitan Club in Clarksville, TN. Edith enjoyed life and always had a smile to share! She loved Bible Studies, playing card games, and BINGO. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Edith was predeceased by her husband, Larry, her mother and father, her brother, Robert James Carter, sister, Barbara Greenwood, and brother-in-law Bob Greenwood. She is survived by nephews, Rob Greenwood, (Gina), Steven Greenwood, (Rochelle), and David Greenwood, and great nephews and nieces.
A Graveside service will be held 12 p.m. on Monday, June 10, 2024, at Greenwood Cemetery.
