Dr. Leon "Smitty" Schmidt McAulay

          Dr. Leon Schmidt “Smitty” McAulay, born December 14, 1935, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2024 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. 

          Leon was the only child of the late Leon McAulay and Dororthy Schmidt McAulay.  He is survived by his grandson, Steven Adams of Nashville, TN; special cousins, Richard and Carol Schmidt of Grand Ledge, MI, Gary and Penny McAulay Shearon of Clarksville, TN, Wendy Mueller of Sand Point, ID; along with several other cousins, and friends.

          Leon was a communicant at St. James the Less Episcopal Church in Madison, TN where he served one term as Senior Warden.  He graduated from Houston County High School in Erin, TN, and would later earn a B.S. at Memphis State University, a B.S.N from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, a M.N. from Emory University in Atlanta, GA, and a PH.D. from the University of Texas at Austin.  Dr. McAulay was elected to membership in the honor societies of Sigma Theta Tau, Pi Lambda Theta, Phi Kappa Phi, and Sigma Xi.   He held teaching and various administrative positions at Emory University, the University of TN Health Sciences Center, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Vanderbilt University, and Cumberland University in Lebanon, TN.  He also served his country as an enlisted man in the United States Army and as a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service.

          Graveside services with full military honors will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, April, 26, 2024 at Sunset Cemetery in Stewart, TN.
