Dorothy Hyams Burney

May 10, 1931 — March 5, 2024

Clarksville

Dorothy Ann Hyams Burney, “Granny”, 92, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2024.

Dorothy was born on her family’s farm on May 10, 1931, in Trenton, Kentucky.  She was the daughter of the late Douglas and Roberta Hyams.  She was also preceded in death by her sister Mary Hyams Waldrop, brother Alvin Sidney Hyams, and her husband Charles Thomas Burney.

Dorothy graduated from Trenton High School, Trenton, Ky. Class of 1950.  She then completed a degree in Cosmetology at Clarksville Beauty School.  She soon met her future husband, Thomas, when he purchased the farm next to her family’s farm.  They married on February 21, 1953, and moved to Clarksville but raised cattle on their farm so she remained close to her family roots.  In the 70’s Josten’s Yearbook Company opened in Clarksville and to her family’s surprise, Dorothy and her good friend Wilma Bowers, applied and got a job!  She began a career in the Camera Department and soon became a “Group Leader” for her girls.  She worked for several years until the health of her husband caused her to retire and she once again became a housewife.  From this point on, her church family became her extended family and she volunteered at all their services until the Fall of 2023.  She especially enjoyed her Fuel Group, United Methodist Women, and traveling with the church on the “church bus” with Joe and Kitty taking the group on many outings.  She was an amazing cook and constantly was baking chocolate pies, banana puddings, pecan pies, and banana bread for church dinners and for those she loved.  Dorothy became known as “Granny” to all of her grandchildren’s friends.  Once again, she provided hours of entertainment for all of them, and loved every minute of it.  She never missed a baseball game, dance recital, or anything she could attend.  She loved to go until the very end!!!!

Survivors include her daughter Debbie Hadley (Ed), grandchildren Dr. Edmund Hadley, III (Meggie) and Kathryn Hadley Shaw (Michael).  Four great-grandchildren:  Adelle Hadley, Hayes Hadley, Mary Margaret Hadley and Thomas Shaw.

Visitation will be from  10 to 11 a.m. followed by the Funeral Service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at St. Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Reverend Corrie Alexander-Willette officiating.  Burial will be at Edgewood Cemetery, Trenton, Kentucky.

Pallbearers will be family and friends of the family.  Honorary Pallbearers will be her many church family friends that she has loved for so many years.

The family would like to give special thanks to her wonderful caregivers Jan Williams and Joanie Eads for all the love and exceptional care they have given her this last year.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions can be made to St. Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 2201 Old Russellville Pike, Clarksville, Tn. 37040.
