Listen to Obituary

CSM (Ret) Charles R. Crosby passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Clarksville, surrounded by those who loved him most. Charles, Chuck to those who knew him, was born on February 5, 1937, in Cairo, Georgia, but spent much of his childhood in Tampa, Florida.

Chuck was devoted to the United States Army and retired as a Command Sergeant Major after 32 years of service. He bravely fought alongside his fellow soldiers and admirably completed two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. Additionally, he spent time in Germany and accepted various assignments in CONUS, finishing his distinguished career with the 2nd Brigade at Fort Campbell. He was the epitome of a soldier, and his military career was marked by a deep sense of responsibility to his fellow enlisted soldiers, a direct reflection of his extraordinary leadership and unwavering dedication to his troops.

Upon retirement from the Army, Chuck settled in Clarksville, where he accepted a position at Jenkins Wynne Ford, eventually becoming the finance manager. In this ‘second career’ as a civilian for fifteen years, Chuck continued his commitment of looking after young soldiers by treating them with honesty, compassion, and displaying quiet strength to guide them. These qualities touched countless lives and set examples for the generations to come.

Chuck is survived by his companion of 49 years, Karin, with whom he lovingly shared his life. Also feeling a deep loss are Karin's daughters;  Iris Loucks and Jannet (Kevin) Hill. Chuck was known as Opa to Matthew Loucks (Kenzie), Jared Hill, and Jonas Hill. The life lessons he imparted to them will be cherished forever.

Aside from his many professional accomplishments, Chuck enjoyed years of grilling, gardening, hunting, and fishing, and other peaceful hobbies in his garage. For Chuck, a perfect day would be to feed the birds and other critters and have deep conversations with his three black labs, Toby, Alex, and Mia, outside. His friendly disposition, unwavering generosity, and uncanny sarcasm were appreciated (experienced) by everyone he met. He was cherished at the Tennessee State Veterans Home (TSVH), where he was once voted Resident of the Month.

Chuck’s loss is deeply felt not only by his family but by all who had the privilege of knowing him. The family would like to offer their sincerest gratitude to his nurses and the entire staff of the TSVH.

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of Chuck at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home in Clarksville, Tennessee. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A burial with Full Military Honors will take place at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West, in Hopkinsville, at noon on October 30, 2026.

Chuck Crosby’s memory will endure in the hearts of his devoted family and in the legacy of honor he leaves behind.
