Chaplain (Lt. Col. Ret.) Charles Currie

Charles Campbell Currie, 86 years old has passed from this earth to sleep in the arms of Jesus as he was promised. He left peacefully for his heavenly mansion on May 19, 2013. He dedicated his life to the work of God and the spread of his word and its promise to us.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, May 23rd at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Clarksville, Faith Chapel, with the Reverend James Shepherd officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West at 1:00 pm, Hopkinsville. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 22nd at the funeral home and 10 a.m. until the hour of service Thursday, May 23rd at First Baptist Church.

Charles was born on September 14, 1926 in Euclid, Ohio the son of Charles Fuller Currie and Alice Pearl Kendall. His sister, Ruth Murphy of Michigan City, Indiana, survives him. His brother Donald Gordon Currie preceded him in death.
He was married to the former Mary Louise Hubbard who preceded him in death. Charles is survived by daughter, Rebecca Currie Womack and her husband Dan, their children; Christine Womack, Teresa Womack Ridgeway (Jason), and Jessica Womack Kim (Sung Min), daughter, Roberta Currie Pace and her husband Wayne and their children; Debbie
Goin Harrison (Ty) and Amanda Pace Green (Chris), daughter Mary Beth Currie Morgan and her husband Cecil, their children; Cecil Morgan, III (Emily) and Benjamin Morgan (Simona), son Charles Bruce Currie and his wife Karen Harper Currie and their children; Erin Currie, Emily Currie, and Lindsey Currie, son James Douglas Currie and his wife Janene Stafford Currie, their children; Ian Currie and Jenna Currie. He has 5 great-grandchildren: Brittany Harrison Whitley, Tyler Harrison, Sam and Cate Ridgeway and Sullivan Green.
Charles graduated from High School at the age of 16 after being granted a full scholarship to Columbia University in New York City. His education was interrupted by the war. During WWII, he served for two years in Sapporo, Japan as a bandsman playing the trombone in the 11th Airborne Division band. After the war, he returned to Columbia and graduated in 1948 with a Pre-Medical Degree. Later that year, he married his wife of 61 years, Mary Louise Hubbard. They moved together to Los Angles, California so that he could attend Los Angles Baptist Theological Seminary later transferring to Dallas, Texas to attend Dallas Theological Seminary where he graduated with a Master’s Degree in Theology in 1955. After graduation, he was called to the Christian ministry as an Army Chaplain. He began his military career at Fort Bragg, North Carolina with the 82nd Airborne Division. During his Military service, Charles completed 83 paratrooper jumps. Charles’s military duty stations included: Fort Bragg, NC, Ludwigsburg, Germany, Fort Campbell, KY, Pajori, Korea, Bayreuth and Nuremberg, Germany, Vietnam, and Fort Knox, KY before retiring as a Lt. Colonel with 20 plus years of service.
Upon retirement from the military, Charles returned to Dallas, Texas to complete his doctorate program at Dallas Theological Seminary. He returned to Clarksville, TN and worked for the Department of Human Services for 11 plus years. Upon retirement from the Department of Human Services, Charles dedicated his life to Mission work and spreading the word of God.
Charles was versed in 8 languages, which helped with his travels to spread the word of Christianity and the promises of God. He provided short term relief for fellow missionaries in several countries to allow them a sabbatical, these include; 2 trips to Sophia, Bulgaria, 1 trip to Mombasa, Kenya, 1 trip to Kyiv, Ukraine, a 2 year stint in Kiev, Russia, 2 trips to Fulda, Germany and a trip to Ibadan, Nigeria. He completed short (2-weeks or less) mission trips to over 38 countries, Brazil, China, the Republic of Georgia, Uganda, Mexico, Russia, Siberia, China, Greece and his last to Nepal, India, to name just a few.
In recent years, Charles taught a Sunday School class at First Baptist Church, led an English speaking service for 10 years at the One Heart Korean Church, served as a volunteer Chaplain at Gateway Hospital, participated in jail ministry, made regular visits with a group from Clarksville to minister at the Nashville Union Mission for over 25 years, and worked at Room at the Inn.
