Bruce Olsen

Dr. Frederick Bruce Olsen, age 88 of Clarksville, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014.
Funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Larry Peters officiating. Burial will follow at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM on Friday, April 25, 2014 at the McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home.
Bruce was born on February 8, 1926 in Norwalk, Connecticut, the son of Clarence Frederick Olsen and Elsie Kelley Olsen. He graduated from Hamilton College and received a PhD from Indiana University. He worked as a Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania and also at Wayne State University. He was the chair of the English department at Briarcliff College in Briarcliff, NY. He retired from Alabama State University as an English Professor. He was a published author of short fictions and essays. Bruce founded Clarksville Astronomy Club and established the Olsen Observatory in Erin, TN which he made available to students and others who were interested in Astronomy. He was a World War II Veteran in the US Army and was involved in the Liberation of Germany and was also a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dr. Phy Olsen; sons, John Olsen and wife Koong-Nah Chung of St. Louis, MO and Robert Olsen of Buffalo, NY; daughter, Nancy Olsen of Binghamton, NY; grandchildren, Eleanor Durfee, Percy Olsen, Eudora Olsen.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Clarksville Humane Society or The Lutheran World Relief.
