Virginia Irene Morrison Griffey, age 93, of Clarksville passed away Thursday, February 11, 2021.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, February 15, 2021, at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home with Rev. Pat VanDyke officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday at 11 a.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home.
Irene was born on March 21, 1927, in Montgomery County, TN, to Edward and Ellen Williams Morrison. After her mother’s death, she was raised by her grandparents Gus “Ducker” and Annie Williams at Peacher’s Mill. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Hubert E. Griffey; sisters, Harriet Ferrell, Marie Stambaugh, and Dorothy Morrison.
Irene and her husband founded Griffey & Associates, Inc., a real estate business they ran until their retirement in 1992. She was a licensed Tennessee real estate broker and insurance agent, as well as a nationally certified professional insurance woman (CPIW). She used her knowledge of land and government records to become a certified genealogist through the Board for Certification of Genealogists. During the course of her life, she helped countless families find their ancestors. In addition to numerous articles and presentations, she authored four books, including “Earliest Tennessee Land Records & Earliest Tennessee Land History,” a foundational work in genealogical literature.
In addition to her career, she was active in her community. She served as President of the Altrusa Club of Clarksville. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School.
Survivors include her sons, Mike Griffey and Steve (Jennifer) Griffey; sister, Laura McElfresh; grandchildren, Erinne (Bryce) Hester, Laura Michael (Steve) Hudson, Garrett Griffey, Allison Griffey, and Jared Griffey; great-grandchildren, Hayden Hester, Ethan Hester, Wells Woodard, and Lily Kate Hudson.

Pallbearers will be Garrett Griffey, Jared Griffey, Hayden Hester, Ethan Hester, Wells Woodard, and Bryce Hester.
